Contruction of Strzelecki Highway bridge over the Morwell River Diversion |
Purpose
To unlock coal reserves for future power generation and provide coal for power generation till 2030.
Project Scope
- Diversion of the Morwell River Diversion (8.3 million m³ and 9.5km long)
- Diversion of Eel Hole Creek (650,000 m³)
- Diversion of Wilderness Creek (200,000 m³)
- Realignment of the Strzelecki Highway (7km) between Morwell and the Thorpdale intersection. This
includes the construction of new bridges over the Morwell River (100m) and Wilderness Creek (30m).
- OD9 Route Upgrade. Includes upgrades to Yinnar Driffield Road, Yinnar Road Floodplain Crossing,
Morwell River Bridge deck and Brodribb Road Realignment.
Progress To Date
The following photos show work on the Morwell River Diversion. There will be a total of 8.3 million m³ of earth moved for this 9.5km river diversion.

- Works commenced - December 2006
- Open new Strzelecki Highway - End March 2008
- Complete Wilderness Creek and Eel Hole Creek Diversions - End May 2008
- Complete Morwell River Diversion Low Flow Channel - May 2009
- Full Diversion to MRD - January 2010
