Project Challenge
RTL’s team to divert the Morwell River that was located between the main mining pit at Yallourn to a more suitable location to allow the ongoing mining of the Main Pit at Yallourn.
RTL's Approach
Diversion of the Morwell River through the Yallourn Open Cut was undertaken under an alliance style contract for Yallourn Energy (now Energy Australia). The project commenced in 2000 and was completed on time and under budget in 2005.
Project Outcomes
1. The project involved the placement of 13 million m³ of engineered fill to create an elevated aqueduct some 3.5 km in length.
2. The project was a finalist in the 2006 Victorian Construction Achievement Awards.
3. The embankment accommodated 4 conveyor tunnels through which coal is transported to the power station.
